Child Protection Policy

FRA provides evidence of the persisting discrimination against ethnic, linguistic, national and other minorities in the EU
“A closer look at the experiences of persons belonging to minorities on the ground reveals that, in many areas of life, discrimination still forms part of what 'belonging to minorities' means”, concludes the report ‘Respect for and protection of persons belonging to minorities: 2008-2010’ launched yesterday by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA).

Based on data collected from 2008 to 2010, the report deals with persons belonging to ethnic, linguistic, national and other minorities. It provides an overview of recent EU initiatives in the relevant fields and the changes introduced with the Treaty of Lisbon. It also looks at the situation of minorities at national level.

The report stresses that although the Lisbon Treaty gives unprecedented prominence to the protection of minorities, it does not provide the EU with new legislative competences that would allow for the formulation of such policies.

Minorities face problems particularly in accessing employment, education and health care.
